Below is a list of two-start pitchers for Week 4 of the fantasy season.
Since this is being released on Friday, this week’s two-start pitchers have yet to make their second start. Therefore, we will “grade” our predictions from week 3 next week.
Week 2 Results:
Must-Start Bust: Wandy Rodriguez – HIT (Terrible WHIP, ERA, K, W)
Advisable -> Elite: Ricky Romero – HIT (Absolutely stellar ERA, WHIP, K)
Worth the Risk: Ryan Rowland-Smith – HIT (Dramatically helped WHIP while not hurting other cats)
Yearly Totals:
Must-Start (1/2) 50%
Advisable (2/2) 100%
Risky (2/2) 100%
Total: (5/6) 83%
On to week 4:
Must-Start pitcher who could bust: Justin Verlander, DET – After his incredible season last year, Verlander has started off 2010 extremely sluggish. With a 6.95 ERA and 1.50 WHIP, his first four starts have not been what owners were expecting when they drafted him. His strikeout numbers will still be elite, but it’s possible that he continues his early season slump by destroying your WHIP and ERA.
Advisable Option that could be elite: Jonathan Sanchez, SF – Sanchez enjoyed a marvelous second half last season (he did throw a no-hitter, for what it’s worth), with a 3.83 ERA and 1.24 WHIP, compared to his first half’s numbers of 4.69 and 1.50. What’s more important, however, was his increased control as his second half K/BB ratio was 2.33, compared to his first half number of just 1.71. He’s started off 2010 hot with miniscule ERA/WHIP numbers and off-the-charts strikeout numbers. He’s yet to strikeout fewer than 6 in a game, so even if he doesn’t continue his elite ERA/WHIP, his magnificent K numbers will be worth the start.
Risky Play that’s actually worth the risk: Tom Gorzelanny, CHC – Gorz figured to be the demoted pitcher once Ted Lilly returned, but in a wild change of events that sent Carlos Zambrano to the pen, Gorzelanny will get two starts this week. Aside from the start where he exited early due to a line drive off the shoulder, he has struck out 7+ batters while allowing 2 or less ER. He’s got two home starts this week versus two underwhelming pitchers, so he could add two wins while helping in other categories.
